13 Things to do in Maui Hawaii
My very first trip to Maui Hawaii was earlier this year and it was an amazing experience! I didn’t stay in one of the luxury maui hotels or one of the maui Hawaii resorts because they were outside of my budget during the time of my visit. I actually stayed in a hostel instead which helped me feel closer to the locals. It also helped me feel a lot less like a tourist. This was completely fine with me, especially since I wasn’t visiting to have a honeymoon maui or anything super romantic.
This Hawaii vacation in Maui was my first solo trip as a traveler so I was determined to keep myself busy and get the most out my stay. I wanted to find out what to do in maui so I loosely planned my trip ahead of time and figured out the rest of my plans once I arrived.
It was my goal to find all sorts of maui adventures and worth while things to do throughout my stay. Thankfully I did find a lot of maui tips by taking recommendations from locals.
I was so excited about all of them that I decided to write this blog post in order to pass all my maui activities onto anyone planning a maui Hawaii vacation.

1. HIKE TWIN FALLS
Twin Falls is a hike that leads to twin waterfalls. There’s also an opportunity for cliff jumping if you’re daring enough. This is one of the maui Hawaii hikes that is very popular. It’s also the first of the waterfalls on the road to Hana. It’s one of the most visited spots here in Maui and I understand why because it’s a beautiful green, nature filled trail. It was raining when I went so we only were able to get to these first waterfalls. Apparently the waterfalls are more massive the higher up you go!
2. PAINT ON THE BEACH
I stayed in a hostel during my time in Maui. It wasn’t luxury maui living but I did get to meet some amazing people. One woman who also stayed in the hostel painted beautiful images of the ocean while siting on the sand of maui beaches. She captured the beauty of Maui through her own artwork without even using an aisle. She simply used a canvas, paint and brushes will painting a beautiful piece of art from her lap. This is definitely something to try if art is one of your hobbies.
3. HIKE THE ROAD TO HANA
Hana Highway is a well known road that many people see when traveling to maui. It‘s a road full of beautiful scenes you can stop to visit along your drive down the road. I’ve heard that this road can get pretty curvy and narrow, making it not advisable to travel alone. This is why I decided to hold off on this one until my next visit but it’s definitely a possible TODO when visiting maui.
4. HALEAKAIA SUNRISE TOUR
This sunrise tour is a very popular activity but make sure to book in advance because this tour sales out quick. Also make sure to pack a jacket if you plan going experiencing this activity since it gets chilly because you’ll be traveling to high altitudes in very early in the morning. You can register for this sunrise tour here.
5. GET YOUR OWN PRIVATE BEACH AT WAIEHU BEACH
This beach is best for privacy. If you’re looking for your own personal beach on the island check out Waiehu beach. I had it pretty much to myself for a few hours other than some golfers at the distance since it’s neighboring a golf course.
6. SPOT SEA TURTLES
Maui has some large sea turtles. But be careful as there are laws to protect the sea turtles due to them being Endangered or threatened species. It is illegal to According to Maui laws best practice is to view the sea turtles at a distance and also it is advise not to jump over the turtle straddle the turtle or harm the turtle in anyway.feed or touch the turtles in anyway. There are two that are most often seen near shore waters which are green sea turtles and hawksbill sea turtle.

Baby beach is located in Lahaina maui. It is located on the North Shore of Hawaii and here you will find local families and children exploring this peach. There’s also a long a coral extended around this beach making the waters calm. It is great for stand up paddle boarding due to the calm waters.

The best things about hikes is that they are free! This particular hike is known as Iao valley which is located in West Maui valley. At Iao Valley you will find a lot of pretty green nature on the hike. You’ll also see tall volcanoes in the distance that are dormant. This hike is very easy and is great for sightseeing. If a volcano is not our forte go ahead and skip this hike.
9. EAT AT BIG MAMAS
Every time I talk to someone about visiting Maui they said this is the place you have to try. So I tried it and I was pleasantly surprised. It was so packed make sure to make your reservations well in advance. There’s also nothing but valet parking so bring a tip. I ordered a popular dish That I believe is no longer on the menu. But I had a little bit of every type of Hawaiian favorite. I enjoyed it and the that I believe is no longer on the menu. But I had a little bit of every type of Hawaiian favorite. The food was great and the service was awesome, the staff was extremely friendly and I enjoyed my time there. Just be aware that it is very expensive.
10. GET LAID
There are various places to get “laid”. The primary places you can get laid is at a luau, but I was not able to make it to a luau during my stay. I ended up getting a laid at the mamas restaurant. If you haven’t ever had a real lei they are gorgeous! I felt so special been so lucky to receive one from a stranger as a sweet gesture.
11. VISIT A FOOD STAND
11. GO SURFING
There are plenty of beaches that are great for surfing. You can get a good idea where these places are along with places that offer surfing lessons here. I’m not the biggest surfer but I saw plenty of surf lessons advertised on various websites, social media, meet up groups and event apps.
12. GO TO A DRUM CIRCLE ON MAKENA BEACH
These drum circles are often on Sunday evenings on Little Beach which is also known as makena beach. also wasn’t able to make it to the drum circle during my stay but my roommate raved over it and enjoyed her time there.
